Born in 1967, John Williams began his career as a ceramicist shortly after leaving Brighton Art College. At first his work comprised largely of ceramic sculptural vessels and he pursued a path similar to many earlier Japanese ceramicists, but gradually his work became more figurative. Now living and working in north London, he spends the summer months sculpting in his studio in the Dordogne region of France.

Williams also undertakes various commissions in both private and in public buildings. In 1994 he was commissioned to make heraldic woodcarvings for The Guild of St. Margaret Pattens (a Christopher Wren Church in Eastcheap). In 2004 he was awarded the ‘Freakley Prize’ for the ‘Most Outstanding Portrait Sculpture’ by the Society of Portrait Sculptors, Cork Street. In 2007 he was awarded a ‘Life Model Bursary’ from the Society of Portrait Sculptors and in 2008 he won a bursary for membership of the Royal Society of British Sculptors. Williams has exhibited in Britain, France and America.
